Rumah Lituhayu in Nyanyi

Completed 2024

A Jungle Sanctuary

Rumah Lituhayu lies in Nyanyi, Tabanan, Bali. It serves as a boutique home for the owner and his family.

The Vision

The owner aspired to create architecture respectful to the site. He wanted cultural aspects woven into the design language. His aim: a home away from home.

The Design Challenge

We crafted a design fitting the lush landscape. The steep slope towards the river demanded careful planning. We recognized nature as the site’s main feature.

Preserving the Trees

Mature trees covered the steeply sloping land. They created shade throughout the tropical day. Each tree is preserved and thoughtfully incorporated. Buildings avoid trees or even penetrate through them.

The Pavilion Cluster

Five pavilions form Rumah Lituhayu. They draw inspiration from traditional Balinese compounds. They also reference Indonesian stilted Bajau homes. Elevated pavilions keep the land untouched. They float above the terrain like tree houses.

Unique Spaces

Every pavilion differs slightly. The living room features tall wooden columns. Its space opens fully to merge garden and interior. The gabled roof extends toward the downstairs corridor. This creates compression and decompression within its span. Four bedroom pavilions share similar layouts. Yet each offers different viewing experiences. Some face the river perpendicularly. Others look sideways or into gardens.

Materials & Palette

Local materials and craftsmanship define the project. Bangkirai wood supports the roof structure. Wooden sirap shingles cover roofs and walls. Paras tulung agung stone adds texture to solid walls. Shou sugi ban wood appears throughout the house. Dark tones blend architecture with the shaded site.
